Water Meters Flashcards
What are the reasons for metering water?
Determine the cost of water produced vs. consumed
JUSTLY AND IMPARTIALLY
encourages people to use less water/be more frugal
List the types of meters used in a water distribution system
Sonic Meter Venturi Meter Turbine Meter Propeller Meter Mag/Sonic Meter Proportional Meter Compound Meter
Describe the accuracy and common usage for a POSITIVE DISPLACEMENT METER
Accurate at low flows
Used for residential units
Describe the accuracy and common usage for a COMPOUND METER
Good for a RANGE of flows because it has a meter for low flows and high flows
Less accurate
Used for Hotels, Hospitals, Some businesses, Schools
Describe the accuracy and common usage for a TURBINE METER
Accurate for High Flows
Easy serviceability
Used for Industry
Used for Sales from one community to another
Label parts of a Positive Displacement meter
Meter Body, Calibrated Chamber, Spindle (counter), Ball, Disc
Screen, Disc, Register
Discuss factors which must be considered in selecting meter size
Expected customer demand
Desired Pressure
Any friction in building (low pressure will not close toilets so they keep running)
Discuss electrical continuity in relation to plastic water meters and the removal of a water meter (plastic or metal) from its setting
Make sure you have a “Continuity Yoke/Horn/Strap” or a grounding strap
Explain what is involved in a meter test bench operation
Run water through meters
Have rotameter set up to see flow
Example: run 100g through
if meter says 98 g, that means it 98% accurate (not 2%)
If meter says 104 g, that means its 104% accurate
Describe the items of information to be recorded on a water meter test card
Manufacturer Type of Meter Installation record (where its been) Testing info/results - accuracy, date Past Repair
