Water - Key Terms Flashcards
What is a flow/transfer?
A form of linkage between two stores which incolves the movement of energy or mass.
What is an input?
The addition of matter and/or energy into a system.
What is a store?
A part of the system where energy/mass is contained.
What is a system?
A set of interlinked components working together.
What is atmospheric water?
Water found in the atmosphere mainly in the form of water vapour and ice crystals.
What is cryospheric water?
Water locked up on the Earth’s surface as ice.
What is terrestrial water?
Water contained in the land mainly in the form of groundwater, soil moisture, lakes, wetlands and rivers.
What is Oceanic water?
Water contained in the Earth’s oceans and seas but not including inland seas e.g the Caspian Sea.
What is condensation?
Water vapour changing to liquid water.
What are cryospheric processes?
Processes which affect the total mass of ice at any scale including accumulation and ablation.
What is evaporation?
The process of liquid water turning to gas.
What is evapotranspiration?
The total output of water directly back into the atmosphere.
What is a drainage basin?
An area of land drained by a river and its tributaries.
What is groundwater flow?
The slow movement of water through underlying rocks.
What is infiltration?
