Water Cycle Science Notes Flashcards
What is irrigation?
Supplying water to areas of land to make them suitable for growing crops.
What is the source of energy for the water cycle?
The sun.
What is a habitat?
The place where an organism lives and where it obtains all the things it needs to survive.
A high coliform count is an indicator that the water may contain what?
Disease causing organisms.
The water in an artinian well rises because of pressure in a?
Within an aquifer.
What is an unsaturated zone?
A layer of rock and soil above the water table where the pores contain air and water.
What is filtration?
The process of passing water through a series of screens that allow water through, but not large, our soil particles.
A ridge of land separating one watershed from another is?
A divide.
What is added to drinking water to kill bacteria and other organisms?
Chlorine.
Using a resource wisely so it won’t be used up is called?
Conservation.
What are all forms of precipitation?
Snow, sleet, hail, and rain.
What is water vapor?
Water in the form of a gas.
What is a pond?
Ponds are bodies of freshwater. They contain still or standing water, and are smaller and sallower than lakes.
What is a bog?
A wetland in a cool, northern area where mosses grow in acidic water.
What is impermeable?
Materials, such as clay and granite, where water does not easily pass.
What is evaporation?
Water molecules in liquid water that escape into the air.
What is pollutant?
A harmful substance in the air, water, or soil.
What is the difference between freshwater and salt water?
Freshwater is water without salt and salt water is water with salt.
What does the water cycle do?
Brings water into the atmosphere, and back down to Earth. There’s three steps to the water cycle. There is also no beginning and end.
What is the difference between a spring and a tributary?
A spring is a water that shoots out of the ground. A tributary is a small river that leads into a big body of water.
What is the difference between PH and water Hardness?
PH is the measurement of how acidic or basic the water is on a scale of 0-14. Hardness is the sample of the two minerals, calcium and magnesium.
What is the difference between Coagulation and Chlorination?
Coagulation is the process by which particles in a liquid clump together. Chlorination is a substance added to drinking water to kill disease causing microorganism.
What is water quality?
The degree of purity in the water.
What is the difference between watershed and a reservoir?
A watershed is the land area that supplies water to a river system. Reservoir is a lake that stores water for humans to use.
