Water Cycle Recap Flashcards
What does transpiration mean?
It is a process in plants where water vapour is let out of the stomata.
What does throughflow mean?
Water or air flowing through something, such as water flowing through the soil.
What does runoff mean?
It is where the ground is saturated and can’t absorb anymore water, so the water flows over it.
What happens in the water cycle stage of evaporation?
This is when the heat from the sun causes water to evaporate, turning into water vapour, and rise into the atmosphere.
What happens in the water cycle stage of condensation?
This is when the evaporated water vapour starts to cool down when it is high in the atmosphere, and it condenses to form clouds.
What happens in the water cycle stage of transport?
This is when clouds get pushed by strong winds and can be transported to other areas.
What happens in the water cycle stage of precipitation?
This is when the water in the clouds falls to the ground. This could be from rain, snow, hail or sleet.
What happens in the water cycle stage of Infiltration?
This is when the water from precipitation is absorbed into the ground and stored there.
What happens in the water cycle stage of surface runoff?
This is when the ground is saturated with too much infiltration, and excess water flows along the surface. This then forms bodies of water, ready to start the cycle again.
What happens in the water cycle stage of transpiration?
Plants absorb water absorbed in the ground, and release some of that through transpiration, where water vapour is released from the stomata. This is equivalent to evaporation, because the water vapour raises, starting the cycle again.
