Climate zones and graphs Flashcards
What is the difference between weather and climate?
Weather is the measure of conditions in the atmosphere, such as temperature and precipitation, on an every day basis in an area. An example is “It’s so windy today” or “Tomorrow it is expected to be hot and dry”.
Climate is the measure of the conditions in the atmosphere such as temperature or precipitation over a long period of time in an area, establishing an average weather for that place and time of year.
What is a climate zone?
A climate zone is an area with a particular and distinct climate.
What are the 4 main climate zones?
Polar (and subpolar) zone
Temperate zone
Subtropical zone
Tropical zone
Which climate zone is cold?
Polar (and subpolar) zone
Which climate zone has 4 seasons?
Temperate zone
Which climate zone is hot and dry (apart from in winter when it can be cool and moist)?
Subtropical zone
Which climate zone is warm and moist?
Tropical zone
Where are the climate zones located?
The tropical zone is located in between the two tropics (of capricorn and cancer), with the equator in the middle.
The sub-tropical zone is located 23.5 degrees to 40 degrees latitude.
The temperate zone is located 40 degrees to 60 degrees latitude
The polar zone is located 60 degrees to 90 degrees latitude.
What is a climate graph?
A graph that shows the temperature and precipitation in a place over a period of time. Along the x-axis is the months, and along one y-axis is the temperature, and the other, precipitation. Temperature is shown with a line, and precipitation with bars.
Practice analysing a climate graph.
