Water Cycle Flashcards
Water Cycle
The continuous movement of water on Earth.
Evaporation
The process in which a substance warms and changes from a liquid into a gas.
Condensation
The process in which a gas cools and becomes liquid.
Precipitation
Water in the atmosphere that falls to earth as rain, sleet, snow, or hail.
Runoff
Water moving downhill. When precipitation falls, water runs off into streams and rivers. From there, water flows to lakes or the ocean.
Groundwater
When precipitation soaks into the ground and becomes groundwater.
Sublimation
The transition of a substance directly from the solid to the gas state, without passing through the liquid state.
Transpiration
When a water droplet evaporates directly from a plants leaf.
Glacier
A slow moving body of ice on land.
Aquifer
Underground water supply.
Reservoir
A human-made place to collect and store water.
Circulation
A swirling movement.
Tides
Pattern of rising and falling water in the ocean caused by gravity.
Salinity
The amount of salt dissolved in water.
