water cycle Flashcards
source
the upland area where the source begins
mouth
where the river flows into the sea or sometimes in a lake
what are the four different river transport processes?
solution, suspension, saltation and traction
solution
minerals are dissolved in the water and carried along in solution
suspension
fine light material is carried along in the water
saltation
small pebbles and stones are bounced along the river bed
traction
large boulders and rocks are rolled along the river bed
what is water cycle?
water on earth is constantly moving. it is recycled over and over again. This recycling process is called water cycle
why does water evaporates into thin air?
the sun heats up water on land, rivers, lakes and seas and turns it into water vapour. The water vapour rises into the air
why does water vapour condenses into clouds?
water vapour in the air cools down and changes back into tiny drops of liquid water, forming clouds
why does water fall as precipitation?
the clouds get heavy and water falls back to the ground in the form of rain or snow
why does water return to the sea?
rain water runs over the land and collects in lakes or rivers which take it back to the sea. the cycle starts all over again
water cycle
water cycle is the journey water takes as it moves from the land to the sky and back again, it follows a cycle of evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection
river drainage basin
- is an area of land where precipiation collects and drains off into a common outlet
- The edge of the basin is known as watershed.
- the water travels towards the centre and leaves the sink through a plug hole.
- The water flowing through the river will eventually leave the river basin through its mouth and enter the sea or lake
what does the water cycle show?
how water moves around between the atmosphere, ocean, rivers and land
