Water cycle! Flashcards
What are the water reservoirs?
Biosphere
- All organisms are partially composed of water
Earth’s surface
- Rivers, Lakes, and Oceans
Underground
- Groundwater systems, stored in aquifers
Earth’s Atmosphere
- Water vapor, clouds
describe the process of evaporation.
Mostly initiated by the sun, water is vaporized and carried throughout the atmosphere
Describe the process of condensation
Water vapor in the atmosphere is condensed into clouds
Describe the process of precipitation.
Atmospheric water is released from clouds in the form of rain, snow, and hail
Describe the process of runoff.
Water from precipitation or melt runs downward along the land and pools into rivers, lakes, and oceans
Describe the process of Infiltration.
On permeable soil, water sinks into the ground into groundwater systems
Describe the process of transpiration
Water from plants is released from leaves, stems, and flowers into the atmosphere
What are all of the steps of the water cycle?
Evaporation
Condensation
Precipitation
Runoff
Infiltration
Transpiration
what is the effect of Urbanization on the water cycle?
reduces groundwater recharge and increases surface runoff. this can cause flooding and alter natural water flow patterns.
what is the effect of deforestation on the water cycle?
Reduces transpiration, decreases atmospheric moisture, changes in precipitation patterns, soil stability and water retention, erosion
what is the effect of reservoir construction on the water cycle?
alters natural river flows and can disrupt ecosystems, change local climates by altering evaporation rates.
what is the effect of Climate change on the water cycle?
Altering temperature and precipitation patterns, extreme weather events, changes in snowmelt timing, and shifting groundwater availability, droughts and floods
what is the effect of Farming on the water cycle?
Irrigation, deplete local water sources and alter natural water flow
How to mitigate the effects of Urbanization?
- Increase the area of protected greenbelt zones near urbanized areas and reduce soil compaction.
- create Sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS)
How to mitigate the effects of reservoir construction
create coastal reservoirs that avoid disrupting river-flow by sourcing water from near the area where the river flows into the ocean.
