Water Cycle Flashcards
What is an open system
When systems receive inputs and transfer outputs of energy or matter with other systems
What is a closed system
When energy inputs equal outputs
What is dynamic equilibrium
Occurred in a system when inputs equal outputs despite changing conditions
What is infiltration
Water moving from above ground into the soil
What is percolation
Water moves from the ground or soil into porous rock or rock fractures
What is throughflow
Flow of water through the soil
What is groundwater flow
Water moved through the rocks
What is stem flow
Flow of water that has been intercepted by plants or trees, down a stem, leaf, branch or other part of a plant
Surface storage
Water is stored in puddles, ponds, lakes etc
What is the water balance
Used to express the process of water storage and transfer in a drainage basin system
Precipitation=runoff+evapotranspiration+ 🔼in storage
What percentage of water is in oceans
97%
What percentage of water is freshwater and what percentage of this is glaciers, ice caps and ice sheets
2.5%
69%
What is bankfull discharge
The maximum capacity of the river. If discharge exceeds this then the river will burst its banks and be in flood
