Water Balance Flashcards
the measure of water’s ability to resist changes in pH. It is also called a buffer.
Alkalinity
What is pH bounce?
Without a proper total alkalinity, the water’s pH can change rapidly from highs to lows
Problems of low total alkalinity
pH bouncing, etching on a pool or spa surface, staining of the walls and floor, and eventually heater failure.
How do you raise total alkalinity?
with Sodium Bicarbonate
How do you lower total alkalinity?
Acid (muriatic or sodium bisulfate)
What happens when alkalinity is too high?
the pH may lock into place, unable to change
How do you lower pH?
Muriatic acid, sodium bisulfate, or carbon disulfate
How do you increase pH?
Sodium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate
How do you increase calcium hardness?
Calcium Carbonate
How do you lower calcium hardness?
dilution by draining and replacing water
TDS should not exceed what amount following a fresh start up?
1,500 ppm
What is Saturation Index?
The method of determining whether water will deposit calcium carbonate or maintain it.
Total alkalinity anchors what water factor?
pH
Chemical levels can be out of range, as long as the pool is balanced according to the saturation index.
False
What is the carbonate alkalinity if the total alkalinity is 60 and the cyanuric acid is 120?
20 ppm
Which Saturation Index Factor is not often adjusted to reach balance?
Temp
