WATER AND CARBON CYCLE - Properties of Water Flashcards
What are the three states of water?
Solid, liquid and gas.
Sublimation
Process of a solid turning to gas.
Deposition
Process of a gas turning to a solid.
Melting
Process of a solid turning into a liquid.
Freezing
Process of a liquid turning into a solid.
Evaporation
Process of a liquid turning into a gas.
Condensation
Process of a gas turning into a liquid.
Fusion
When a solid becomes a liquid.
Vaporisation
When a liquid becomes a gas.
What bond does water have?
Strong hydrogen bonds.
What is the result of strong hydrogen bonds of water?
Water has a high surface tension. It can hold itself together as a drop rather than spreading out as a film. Animals use property to move along surfaces eg. Pond skater. Water can be taken up plant stem.
Due to strong hydrogen bond of water what is required for phase change?
Lots of energy.
Latent Heat - evaporation
Water molecules heated by sun become agitated and try to break bonds between them. Not enough heat in sun to do this. So water molecules absorb energy from surroundings to give them final energy needed to break bonds. Energy is latent heat. As latent heat taken from surroundings it cools surroundings down.
Latent Heat - condensation
During condensation, latent heat is released by water molecules as they slow down and join together. This adds heat to surroundings so is a warming process.
