Water Flashcards
State and explain the methods of water supply.
- Dams - store water, provides energy, flood prevention, irrigation. However, impacts wildlife habitats.
- Aquifer - water percolates into permeable rock until it reaches impermeable rock and the water is stored.
What are some impacts of lack of water in an area?
Lack of food production due to lack of fertile soil.
Deaths and dehydration.
What is the case study for Water Supply
China is the study taught and on the KLP.
California, USA is the case study in the Orange textbook.
What are 4 causes of water insecurity in China?
- Agriculture - Shares 65% of water use
- Industry dumping waste into the Yangtze river
- Water shortage in the North - South-North transfer project
- Growing middle class putting pressure on existing water sources
What are the causes of water scarcity?
- Overuse - using too much river, lake or aqufiet water can cause the source to dry up
- Pollution - polluting a water source can cause the water to be unpotable or bad for use in agriculture
- Conflict - if a water source is controlled by the enemy, it wont be possible to acces the water source.
- Distance - a water source will be inaccessible in LICs that dont have the money to pump water long distances
- Drought - when there isnt enough rainfall in an area to sustain a river, lake or other water source
Causing those water sources to dry up
What is Rainwater Harvesting
Collecting water from precipitation. One of the most sustainable water supply methods.
What is the largest use of water.
Agriculture at around 70% of water use
Name 5 processes in the water cycle
Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Surface Run Off Transpiration
How is Water saved in agriculture
Drip feed irrigation systems instead of sprinklers.
60% of water used in agriculture is water by bad irrigation systems
How is water saved in industry
Recycle waste water after use in processes such as steel making.
How is water saved in the household
Use more efficient appliances.(HIC) Turn of Taps (HIC) Collecting Rainwater for garden use (HIC) Wells (LIC) Boreholes (LIC)
