What is the functions of water?
All cells contain water
All body fluids contain water
Many chemical reactions use water
Body temperature is controlled by removing heat through sweating
Needed for digestion and absorbing nutrients
Remove waste products from the body in urine
Keeps lining of digestive system , mucous membrane and the lungs healthy and moist
Controls concentration of substances, such as minerals in the blood
Keeps skin healthy and moist
What are the effects of a deficiency of water?
Thirsty Headaches Urine dark in colour Feeling weak and sick Body becomes overheated Wrinkled skin Feeling confused Changes in blood pressure and heart rate
What are the effects of excess of water?
Cause concentration of substances in the blood, such as minerals, to become dangerously over-dilute. This can quickly affect the function of vital organs in the body, such as the heart and kidney, and can be fatal
What is the amount of water needed per day
Approx. 1-2 litres of water
