Water Flashcards
The substance, such as sugar, is called what?
Solute
The dissolving of a substance in a liquid produces a…?
Solution
What is specific heat capacity?
The shc of a substance is the heat needed to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of the substance by 1 kelvin degree. OR
A substance is the number of joules of heat energy needed to raise the temperature of 1gram of that substance by 1 degree Celsius.
What is an EXOTHERMIC reaction?
Heat that is released and moves from the reaction vessel to the water, causing its temperature to rise.
What is a ENDOTHERMIC reaction?
Heat is absorbed from the water, causing its temperature to fall
What is latent heat of vaporisation?
When one gram of water at 100C is changed into steam at 100C, 2261 joules of heat energy are used.
Note :
Temperature remains constant, but the state of the matter has changed.
What is latent heat of fusion?
When one gram of ice at 0C is changed into water at 0C, 334 joules of heat energy must be given to the ice.
When a substance dissolves in a liquid such as water, the liquid is called what?
Solvent
What is the density of liquid water?
1.00g ml^-1
What is the specific heat capacity of water?
4.18J g^-10*C^-1
What is a lone pair?
Non-bonding pairs
What is viscosity?
Measured of its resistance to flow or be poured.
What is surface tension?
Forces acting on the surface of a liquid and is a measure of the resistance of a liquid to increase its surface area.
Which substance has a higher surface tension then water?
Mercury
Why do the electrons pairs in water repel each other ?
They are negatively charged and negative charges repel each other.
Identify the geometrical arrangement of the electron pairs.
Tetrahedron
Explain why the water shape is not described as a tetrahedral.
The shape is determined by the atoms on the ends of the bonding pairs and not by the arrangement of the 4 electron pairs.
Identify the shape of the water molecule.
Bent or V-Shaped
Identify the shape of ammonia molecule.
Pyramidal
Which following molecule/s has the shape of V-shaped or bent ?
(A) Water and hydrogen suffice
(B) Water
(C) Water and ammonia
(A) Water and hydrogen sulfide
