Water (2.2) Flashcards
Describe the structure of water
Water is made up of two hydrogen atoms covalently bonded to an oxygen atom. It is a polar molecule because of the charge difference between the oxygen and hydrogen atoms. Oxygen is slightly negative and hydrogen is slightly positive.
Hydrophilic
Water attracting. Hydrophilic compounds dissolve in water because the molecules are more attracted to the water than they are to each other.
Hydrophobic
Water-repelling. Hydrophobic compounds do not dissolve in water because the molecules are more attracted to each other than they are to the water.
Why does water have thermal properties?
Because water can absorb a lot of heat before changing state. This is due to the extensive hydrogen bonding between water molecules. The hydrogen bonds have to be broken before a change in state can occur so this requires a lot of energy.
Why does water have cohesive/adhesive properties?
Because water molecules have the capacity to form intermolecular associations with molecules that share common properties.
Why does water have solvent properties?
Because of its polarity.
