water Flashcards
what are water stores
place where water is contained in, can be categorised as freshwater and saltwater stores
examples of freshwater stores
glaciers, rivers, lakes, groundwater and soils
examples of saltwater stores
oceans/seas
what is soil moisture
water that is stored in the pores of soil when it rains
what is groundwater
-found below surface of earth
-water enters ground through pores in soil due to gravity
-groundwater forms when part of the water makes its way to the rocks beneath
-water fills up pores and cracks of rocks
-people dig wells to access groundwater
hydrological cycle
precipitation:
-water falls as rain/snow
groundwater
-water that seeps into ground may be absorbed by plants or stored as groundwater
surface runoff:
-water flows from highlands and over the ground surface into streams and rivers
evaporation:
-sun’s heat causes water to evaporate, water change into water vapour
transpiration:
-plants give out water vapour through leaves
condensation:
-warm moist air cools as it rises
-water vapour change into water droplets, which combine to form bigger droplets
-large amount of water droplets gather to form clouds
what is a flood
-overflow of a large amount of water onto what is normally dry land
-occur when amount of water is not drained away efficiently by man-made structures
what is a drought
a long period of little/no rainfall, water stores such as reservoirs and groundwater dry up
