temperature Flashcards
what is climate
average weather condition of a specific place over more than 30 years
what is temperature
conditions of the atmosphere at specific place over a relatively short period of time
what are the elements of weather
- temp
- RH
- clouds
- rainfall
latitude: temp near equator
-angle at which sun’s ray strike earth is higher
-result in solar radiation being concentrated over smaller area
-hence temps are higher
latitude: temp further from equator
-angle at which sun’s ray strikes earth is lower
-results in solar radiation being spread out over larger area
-hence temps are lower
altitude: base of mountain
-air is dense with more air and dust particles which absorb and retain more heat
-this is because gravity pulls most of the air molecules towards ground surface
altitude: top of mountain
-air is less dense with less air and dust particles which absorb and retain less heat
lapse rate
6.5 degree celsius drop for every 1000m increase in altitude
cloudy day: daytime
-clouds reflect some solar radiation back into space
-results in less solar radiation reaching ground
-hence relatively lower temp
cloudy day: nighttime
-clouds slow down rate at which heat escapes into space
-hence cloudy nights feel warmer as atmosphere retains more heat
cloudless day: daytime
-incoming solar energy can reach earth’s surface without obstruction
-hence ground heats up more quickly, resulting in warmer temp
cloudless day: nighttime
-clear skies allow maximum amount of heat to escape into space
-hence atmosphere cools down quickly, resulting in relatively lower temp
