Water Flashcards
what are the 4 properties of water?
- polarity
- hydrogen bond formation
- solvent properties
- colligative properties
what is the dipole moments of water ?
the dipole moments of water is 1.8 D
what are the 3 things water is good at dissolving ?
its good at dissolving polar solvent and charged things
1. AA’s & Peptides
2. small alcohols
3.carbohydrates
why is water good at dissolving polar and charged molecule but non polar
they have the ability to form H-bonds that increase the solubility whiles non polar molcules are hydrophobic due to entropy
what is the hydrophobic effect
it is the association or folding of non polar molecules in aq sln. both on enthalpy and entropy decreases
what are the 4 reasons that make the hydrophobic effect key ?
- protein folding
- protein-protein association
- formation of lipid molecules
- binding of ligand steroid hormones
what is the mechanism of the hydrophobic effect ?
water molecules forms a cage shape around the non polar solute and new hydrogen bonds are formed due to the decrease in entropy of water in the presence of a non polar solute
why is the hydrophobic effect key for ligand binding ?
it is key as binding sites in enzymes and receptors are usually hydrophobic and allow the binding of hydrophobic ligands like steriods hormone
why is the hydrophobic affect key for protein folding & membrane formation?
the hydrophobic part of side chains are buried during protein folding and are not exposed to the solvent
