Water Flashcards
What is the average salinity of ocean water
35/1000
How can swimmers float in the dead sea
Because the salinity of the dead sea is 340/1000 . They can float because of the density of the water.
Where is the dead sea located
Israel
When is world water day celebrated
22 march
How are waves formed
They are formed when the winds scrape across the ocean surface.
Why is tsunami also called harbour waves
Because they destroy harbours
Write about ocean currents
The warm ocean currents originate near the equator and move towards the poles. The cold currents carry the water from poles to lower latitudes.
Give an example of cold and warm current
Labrador current and gulf stream.
Where are the best fishing grounds
Where the warm and cold currents meet.
Why is it difficult to navigate near the seas of Japan and north America
Because, the cold and warm current meet near the place forming a foggy weather.
What is the salt dissolved in the oceans
Sodium chloride
How do huge waves affect a place
Huge waves may cause tremendous destruction. An earthquake, a volcanic eruption or under water landslides. As a result a huge tidal wave is called tsunami.
How big was the largest tsunami
150m high. Indira point got submerged in a tsunami.
Why do rivers not have tides
Because of the small quantity and it is not completely exposed to sun ar moon
What causes tides
The gravitational pull of sun and moon
When are spring tides formed
When the sun, moon and earth are in a same line. Usually during full moon and new moon days. The tides are at the highest
When are neap tides formed
During the first and last quarter of the moon. The water is drawn diagonally opposite. This results in low tides.
How do high tides help us
1) help in navigation as they raise water level close to the shore.
2) help in fishing as fishes come closer to the shore during high tide .
3) due to the raise and fall of water , tides generate electricity.
