Water Flashcards
Functions of the water in the body (6)
- Ingestion
- Digestion
- Absorption
- Transportation of nutrients
- Regulation of body temp
- Excretion of waste products
What does water consumption depend on
- Climate
- Clothing
- Physical activity
- Age
Thirst
Consumption of liquids is governed by thirst and habit, both of which can be overridden
How much to drink
There is no recommendation made on the intake of water in the DRV report in the UK
Water loss
Water loss through kidneys as urine and through the skin as sweat and through faeces
Water balance
Kidneys maintain water balance
What is the body’s response to dehydration
- Plasma volume decreases
- Blood osmolality
- Increased reabsorption of water and sodium
Hyponatremia definition
Low sodium concentration in the blood
Hyponatremia symptoms
- Nausea
- Headache
- Confusion
- Loss of energy
- Muscle weakness
- Coma
Exercise induced hyponatremia
Sodium loss through excess sweating when exercising
Beverage hydration index
Different beverages will hydrate us more than others shown by the scale on the index
Water in foods
Foods also contribute towards our requirements for water
Fluid recommendations for sport
- Before = 2 hours before consume 400-600ml fluid
- During = 150-350ml fluid every 15-20 mins
- After = Adequate fluids to replace sweat losses
Calculating sweat rate
Some people sweat more than others and will therefore require more fluid replenishment to maintain physical performance
