Water Flashcards
Water
made up of three atoms: two hydrogen and one oxygen
Water Molecule
H2O
Oxygen Atom
attracts electrons; negative charge; one in a water molecule
Hydrogen Atom
positive charge; two in a water molecule
Hydrogen Bonds
formed between two different water molecules; positive hydrogen end, negative oxygen end
Interaction between Water Molecules
hydrogen bond end of one water molecule; molecule is attracted to positive end of another water molecule
Cohesion
attraction between water particles of the same substance; results in surface tension; produces a surface film
ex) water striders
Adhesion
attraction between two different substances; water will make hydrogen bonds with other surfaces
ex) transpiration
High Specific Heat
amount of heat needed to raise or lower 1g of a substance by 1C degree; water resists temp change, both heating and cooling; water can absorb or release large amounts heat energy with literal in actual temp
Water Density as a Solid
water is less dense as a solid; ice is less dense than a liquid, ice floats; frozen water forms crystal like lattice
Solute
substance that is being dissolved
Solvent
substance into which the solute dissolves
