Basic pathology of wasting and thirsting
yin, fluids deficiency, and heat, dryness excess. (the root of the disorder is yin xu; the manifestation of the disorder is heat and dryness)
*other pathologies: KD yin and yang dual vacuity, blood stag, phlegm accum. main sites include LUs, ST, KDs. may involve SP, HT, LV
Main symptoms of Wasting and Thirsting
- severe and incessant thirst (polydipsia)
- Excessive hunger (polyphagia)
- Frequent urination and copious turbid urine (polyuria)
- weight loss and emaciation

What are the patterns for the “3 traditional subtypes”?
- Upper Xiao : LU Heat w/ Injury to the fluids
- Middle Xiao: Profusion of ST Fire
- Lower Xiao: A. KD Yin Xu B. KD Yin and yang xu
Xiao Ke: Upper Xiao- LU Heat w/ injury to fluids
Tx: clear heat, moisten LU, generate fluids, and relieve thirst
Fx: XIAO KE FANG
Xiao Ke: Profusion of ST Fire
Tx: clear ST heat, drain fire, nourish yin, and generate fluids
Fx: YU NU JIAN
Xiao Ke: Lower Xiao- KD Yin Xu
Tx: Nourish KD yin, moisten dryness
Fx: LIU WEI DI HUANG WAN
Xiao Ke: Lower Xiao- KD yin and yang xu
Tx: warm the yang, nourish yin, tonify and secure KD
Fx: SHEN QI WAN (KD Qi pill)
Xiao Ke- Blood Stasis
Tx: invigorate blood, dispel stasis, free the channels and network vessels
Fx: JIANG TANG HUO XUE TANG (sugar reducing, blood activating decoction)
Xiao Ke- Phlegm Damp
Tx: transform phlgm, regulate qi and strengthen SP
Fx: CANG FU DAO TAN WAN
