Wasting Processes Flashcards
What is the process of ‘forming’ and give examples?
Forming - Bending, shaping or wasting (removing material)
Examples: Cutting, drilling, bending
What is the process of ‘redistribution’ and give examples?
Redistribution - Melting the material and then re-moulding it.
Examples: Injection moulding, die casting, extrusion (a process to create a specific shaped object by pushing the object through the die)
What is the process of ‘addition’ and give examples?
Addition - Fabrication (Joining materials together)
Examples: Welding, 3D printing
What is wasting?
Wasting is a subtractive process that removes material to shape an object.
How are metal and plastic typically formed?
Metal and plastic can exist in a molten state and are often formed or cast into the necessary shape.
Why are wasting techniques often considered environmentally unfriendly?
Wasting techniques are often the least environmentally friendly due to the amount of waste material.
Can waste material from wasting techniques be reused?
Yes, waste material can often be recycled or reused.
What is used to affect the surface finish of materials?
A range of abrasives are used to affect the surface finish of materials.
What is routering?
Routering is a process similar to milling that uses rotary cutters to remove material from softer materials such as wood, foam, and some metals.
What types of routering tools are available?
Routering tools can be CNC operated or in hand-held form as a plunge router.
What tasks can a plunge router perform?
A plunge router can perform a variety of tasks, including putting a profile on an edge and cutting out shapes from panels.
How can a router be used in a table setup?
A router can be mounted into a table, allowing the user to feed material into the cutter rather than moving the router itself.
What is die cutting?
Die cutting is the process of cutting shapes from materials using a die or cutting tool.
What is creasing?
Creasing is the process of creating a fold line in materials to facilitate folding.
What type of products are often produced from flat sheets of corrugated cardboard?
Products such as fold flat cardboard packaging are often produced from flat sheets of corrugated cardboard.
