Wastewater Treatment Flashcards
x
What is Wastewater?
Fouled water by human use or natural processes
What is unit operations?
When treatment is governed by physical forces
What is unit procesess?
When treatment is governed by chemical or biological reactions
What are the different stages in treatment?
Primary, Secondary and advanced (tertiary) treatment
What does primary treatment entail?
screening and sedimentation to remove floating and settleable solids
What does secondary treatment entail?
Removal of organic matter using chemical and biological processes
What does advance treatment entail?
Combination of unit operations and the process to remove addtional constituents such as: nitrogen and phosphorus.
what is overflow?
overflow - excess wastewater beyond the capacity of the treatment plant leading to spills into the environment
Name a common biological treatment?
Activated Sludge Process
What are a three types of sewer systems?
Sanitary, storm sewer systems and Combined
* Sanitary - Handles Domestic + Industrial + inflitration waste
* Storm - Only handles storm water diverting any runoff straight into natural water bodies.
* Combined - handles sanitary + stormwater
What are the three main characteristics of wastewater?
Physical, Chemical and Biological
What are the phyiscal characteristics of wastewater
Colour, odour, temperature and soilds
List the important contaminants of concern in wastewater treatment
- Suspended soilds
- Biodegradable solids
- Pathogens - microorganisms like bacteria, viruses and protozoa which can cause diseases.
- Nutrients - nitrogen and phosphorus can lead to eutrophication
- Priority Pollutants
- Refractory Organics
- Heavy Metals
- Dissolved inorganics
