Wastewater Flashcards
1
Q
What are 3 types of water pollution?
A
- Suspended Materials
a) large objects
b) particulate matter - Dissolved Materials
a) organics
b) N, P, low organics
c) inorganics - Microbes and Viruses
2
Q
What are 3 components of treatment?
A
- Physical Components
- Chemical Components
- Biological Components
3
Q
What is the wastewater treatment sequence?
A
- Screening: remove large debris
- Primary Classification: separates suspended solids via sedimentation
- Activated Sludge Process: uses microbial activity to degrade organic material
- UV Disinfection: kills pathogens in water
4
Q
What is BOD and what does it indicate?
A
- measures the amount of oxygen required by microorganisms to decompose organic matter in water
- indicates level of biodegradable pollution
5
Q
What is COD?
A
- measures the amount of oxygen required to chemically oxidize organic and inorganic matter in water
6
Q
How does the COD process work?
A
Wastewater sample in mixed with the oxidant and boiled using reflux for 3 hours. The remaining dichromate is measured by titration
7
Q
Describe a procedure to determine 5 day BOD
A
- Sample Collection
- Dilution
- Seeding (if required)
- Initial DO measurement
- Incubation
- Final DO measurement
- Calculate BOD = Doi - Dof
