waste minimisation Flashcards
The 3R’s to minimisation
reduce
reuse
recycle
what is it?
Process of reducing the amount of resources that are unused/ discarded in a business
Reduce
minimsiing the amount of waste generated by the operations system in the first place.
how does reduce look like?
-changing process, fewer materials/inputs e.g reducing the amount of labour if demand is lower than demand
-removing unnecessary packagaing
-implementing JIT
-Using higher quality materials
-Implementing tech
Reuse
taking inputs that have already been processed in an operations system and finding ways to utilse them again
how does reuse look like?
-Repairing broecken equipment
-repurposing items e/g a acfe could use glass cups instead of plastic ones and expect their customers to give it back to them after use
-Using waste form one process as an input in a different process
Recycle
processing waste products into new generations to avoid using more materials
How does Recycle look like?
Business oftenpartner with rececyling services
Reduce and reuse should occur first as recycling often requires a significant amount of energy and resources to collect, sort and process the waste.
what would it mean to recycel–> what can we do?
This can mean:
-Curhsing and melting materials made form metals and plastic
-Donating equipment for future use
-Repurposing e.g plastic containers
effiency
-using fewer resources to produce products
-Focusing on reducing and reusing can lead to more efficient processes.
effectivness
-lowering long term costs
-reducing impact on enviornment
-enhance reputation
limiataions
-high intial costs with complexity of implementation
-increased energy with recycling
-some waste can be used to generate revenue e.g 10 cents bottles
what are some other waste besides tangible watse?
-Trasnporation waste–. Driving too much, waist time
-Inventory waste
-Wiating times
-Over production and processing
