Dangerous good
A product, substance or organism included in TDG
Waste
solid or liquid that is intended to be disposed of
Hazardous waste HW
waste that has 1 or more properties described in schedule 1 (WCR) but not schedule 2
Hazardous recyclables
recyclable that has one or more properties described in schedule 1
Inert waste
Waste that is not reasonable expected to undergo change
Typical generator waste streams
- industrial – Pulp & paper, O+G, mining
- commercial – auto shops, drycleaners
- municipal – household
- institutional – U of C, foothills
From a regulatory perspective waste in AB can be subdivided into 2 main catagories
- oilfield waste – AER
- Non-oilfield waste – AEP
These streams are then divided into NHW, HW, or HR
Exempt waste
- Household waste
- agricultural waste – crops & manure
- domestic waste (bio solids)
- radioactive waste (CNSC)
- waste resulting from emergency clean ups
- biomedical waste
- HR
- Oilfirld waste
Small quantities exclusion
< 5kg for solids, < 5L for liquids
Does not apply to chemicals listed in 4.3 b), classified by TDG
Type “P” waste
Extremely dangerous wastes that can only be transported w/ special permits, not regulated under WCR
