Swan hills Flashcards
opened in
1987
location
250 km NW of EDM
Waste streams accepted
- solids
- liquids
- sludges
NO GASES
Primary components of swan hills are
- incinerator facility - two high temp rotary kilns
- phys/chem processing and neutralization facility
- stabilization plant
- DWI facility
- landfill - class 1
Incineration process: org liquids, solids (pcbs, ods), sludges
- Primary combustion - 800-1300 for 40 min (creates bottom ash)
- flue gases
- secondary combustion - 1200 for 2 seconds (creates fly ash) - attempting to get complete combustion of organic waste
- air pollution control systems - deals with non-incinerated HW and HW created by this process
must achieve DRE 99.9999%
2 main purposes of incineration
- ~ 90% volume reduction
2. toxicity reduction - incineration destroys this molecular structure
Air pollution control systems for flue gasses
HCL,HF, SOx, P205 - alkaline scrubbers
NOx - catalytic converters
TCE - +CH4
Dioxins, furans, Particulate matter - fabric filters
Phys/Chem treatment process
Inorganic solids and liquids > Treatment ( Redox, neutralization, precipitation) > filter (separates solids and liquids) > liquids (DWI) > solids > stabilization > landfill
Stabilization Input materials
- Solids from phys/chem plant
- Flyash and bottom ash
- solid HW containing heavy metals
Stabilization purpose/process
- Immobilize heavy metals as a non-leachable, chemically inert substance
- Mix with concrete and other chemicals
Landfill cells:
Geology - impermeable clays
Liners - insitu clays and synthetic liners
waste - Solids only
LF design - 2 liners, leachate collection system, covers
capacity
96000 m^3
11 cells total, 9 full
Monitoring program includes
- GRD WTR
- Surface water
- air emissions
- soil
- leachate
- wildlife
- Plants/vegetation
Cradle-to-Grave tracking
- Manifest forms
2. Certificate of destruction - issued by SH to generator
