Waste Flashcards
What is waste
Any unwanted material discarded because it has reached the end of its usefulness
What is the “catch-all” phrase of waste
Municipal waste: Waste generated by households, commercial establishments, institutions, and industries
What does Municipal waste contribute to
Waste stream (the flow of varied wastes from varied sources)
What are the two types of waste
Biodegradable and Non-biodegradable
Define Biodegradable
Waste that naturally decomposes over time (food, garden waste)
Define Non-biodegradable
Waste that cannot be broken down by decomposers (plastic, glass, metals)
How is waste a matter of socioeconomic conditions
Consumption and waste generation tend to rise with the standards of living ( the type of community will affect the amount and quality of waste generated)
What are the first 2 impacts of poor solid waste management
Aesthetically piled garbage is unpleasant
Accumulated unsorted garbage release foul smells and contributes to air pollution
What are the last 3 impacts of solid waste management
Insects reside in unsorted waste, increasing the likelihood of spreading diseases
Polluted liquid can be easy to water resources and contribute to water pollution
It can contaminate soil if discarded on open soil or unpaved surfaces
Do we burn, dump, or bury trash
None of them are good ways to discard trash since they all contribute to some type of pollution
