crisis 1: occupation of the Rhur
1) Germany didn’t keep up with reparation payments
2) French determined to make Germany pay
3) January 1923 French and Belgium troops marched in to the Ruhr (most important industrial area)
4) German people in the area refused to work for the French in a passive resistance
5) Germany lost income from the area due to the passive resistance
Crisis 2: inflation
1) German government did not have enough to pay for the cost of the passive resistance in the Ruhr
2) Germany just printed more money to solve this
3) when country prints money it doesn’t have, value of money goes up and prices go up
4) Had been happening since the Kaiser but got much worse in 1923
5) people who worked hard their whole life turned into beggers

Crisis 3: The Munich (Beer Hall) Putsch
1) September 1923 Chancellor Stresemann decided to end passive resistance to France
2) right wing found this a betrayal
3) Nazi party helped launch a revolution

1) August 1923 Stresemann became chancellor and called of passive resistance took courage to abandon
2) October government scrapped the old worthless money and introduced a new, temporary currency, which was strictly limited
3) To keep control of strongly left wing army order was given to depose of Saxony and Thuringia who were left wing. army was then asked to remove more dangerous right wing nationalists in Bavaria
4) November, German government agreed to resume reparations
