Was The Tsar State Secure Flashcards
Context 1
Hard country to rule as its size meant there were lots of religions, cultures, heritages and politics a ruler must be aware of
Context 2
By the mid 19th century Russia had begun to modernise, Alexander II freed the serfs in 1861
Factor 1 evidence
Alexander had good control over Russia as there was censorship, no free press and the 1881 statue of tsar state gave him more power. This made it harder to go against him as anti Tsar views were not spread
Factor 1 second evidence
Nicholas helped to industrialise Russia, in the 1890s through the development of railroads connecting iron and coal mines with factories
Meant he was liked and therefore secure since people had no real reason to revolt against him
Factor 1 counter argument
Nicholas was not unstressed in politics and generallly a weak ruler, making him hated and succesptable making revolts both more likely and easier to revolt
Factor 2 evidence 1
Effective at stopping uprisings between 1883 and 1903 used 1500 times for unrest. Deterrent
Factor 2 evidence 2
2.6 million men in it. Very imposing and therefore hard to revolt against for small groups
Factor 2 ca
Soldiers were treated poorly often flogged and had low wages meaning they wouldn’t have much loyalty to the tsar state
The Okrana evidence 1
300000 exiles to Siberia and 10688 serving hard labour in 1898. Deterred people from uprising and temporarily got rid of opposition
Okrana evidence 2
Relatively small size, 2500 members at any one time. This meant they were given the best equipment and training and therefore better at keeping the tsar secure
Okrana ca
Sending people to other countries wasn’t necessarily effective, for example Lennon was moved to London and Paris multiple times and was able to continue spreading propaganda and pamphlets
Orthodox Church evidence 1
Head of the church was the tsar and a comittee of holy. Tsar had complete control over what the church could and couldn’t say and could therefore influence the public through the church
Orthodox Church evidence 2
Had 4000 parish schools were children were taught loyalty to the tsar. More people grew up with these ideas and would therefore have loyalty to the tsar
Orthodox Church ca
The church didn’t have much of an issue in urbanised Russia
Opposition evidence 1
There was no free press in Russia. Anti tsar ideas could not be spread in Russia and less people would want a rebellion or even know of one
