What’s 2 meaning of “cups ran over”?
When he went in the Bank their cups ran over.
METAPHOR.
1. They were so unbelivably happy for him that he escaped and made something of himself.
2. They began to escape their level of proverty by having a son who had a decent job.
his passport from the years of brutal toil
and lonely patience in a barren hole.
This education was a means to get him away from working in harash conditions. It allowed him a way to escape manual labour.
For the parents to view life on the farm as a ‘barren hole’, it shows that they really think that this is not a life for him.
They marvelled how he wore a milkwhite shirt
work days and jeans on Sundays.
He was able to take the day off and relax, unlike on the field.
And he said nothing. Hard and serious like a
young bear inside his teller’s cage,
This expresses how he may have had different feelings from his parents, but kept quitet and followed their wishes due to their sacrifices and happiness for them.
SIMILE
Teller clarifies his job role at the bank. However, his reference to being inside a cage indicates that he is dissatisfied with his job or career. He feels completely trapped and stuck.
Furthermore, the young bear refers to how he views himself as wild and less formal than he is expected to be in his current situation. This relates to the next set of lines.
his axe-hewn hands upon the paper bills
aching with empty strength and throttled rage.
ALLITERATION
He has labourer’s hands and it just seems unnatural for him to be leading this life.
Empty strength shows he is unhappy and lacks an outlet for his energy. He is developing resentment for his task but is not expressing it.
Theme
There comes a day when everyone needs to sacrifice something.
If children do not decide their own futures, they will face great difficulties.
You must attempt to realize your goals because if you stay silent, you will be miserable and unsatisfied forever. Parents cannot attempt to achieve their dreams through their children. You cannot live vicariously through other people.
