Solioquy, Aside, Monologue, Some language Flashcards
Aside
When a character in a play says something to the audience that the other characters on stage can’t hear.
Soliloquy
- length speech made when no other characters are on the stage. Thoughts are addressed to the audience, the purpose is to reveal secrets, private feelings and plans for the audience.
Monologue
- lengthy speech addressed (like soliloquy) to the other characters, not the audience.
Blank Verse
- a type of speech that has a set rhyme and meter; lyrical. The majority of the play is written this way. (FANCY VERSION)
Prose
- opposite of blank verse: without rhythm and normal speech. Occasionally characters speak this way, and it is intentionally when done and used: (JUST THE SAME AS A REGULAR CONVERSATION)
Imagery - used to evoke strong emotions in the readers minds. Shakespeare uses different types of imagery to get messages across.
1) Animal imagery - calls Othello “Barbary horse” and “old black ram” while Desmona was a”white ewe”. They were trying to paint a picture in Brabantio’s mind of a negative Othello and make him mad.
2) References to Women - certain characters say certain things about women. Othello was called a “thief” which shows women as property of men. Iago also refers to women as “guinea-hens” which meant ‘prostitute’ and stereotyping them in a derogatory way.
Hamarita
The tragic flaw of the main character, which leads to their downfall, is called the “hamartia.”
Kirino
meaning to “judge”
Krites
meaning “a jude or jury person”.
📌 [3 reasons for Shakespear to switch from BLANK VERSE to PROSE]
- Shakespeare wrote his plays in a way that THE RICH and WEALTHY characters spoke in fancy black verse, while THE POOR characters spoke in regular language, also known as prose.
- Whenever he wanted a FUNNY MOMENT in his play, he switched to prose, so that the audience could easily understand and appreciate the humor.
- To indicate secrecy or conspiracy.
