Warning Systems Flashcards
Three different levels of communication alert?
- Low - requires timely awareness and response
- Medium - requiring immediate awareness and prompt response (accompanied with an aural chime)
- High - not used
How know when more than one page of EICAS messages?
Blue triangle page cue appears along the bottom
Can EICAS warning messages be cleared with Cancel/Recall switch?
No
How clear warning alerts?
Only by correcting the condition causing the warning
What does Cancel switch do on EICAS?
Clears all displayed caution and advisory alerts
Whats the only warning that doesn’t trigger the master warning?
Stall warning
How long does master warning light remain illuminated?
Until master warning switch pushed or condition ceases to exist
Pushing master warning switch silences the warning siren and fire bell except for what warnings? (4)
- landing configuration
- autopilot disconnect
- takeoff configuration
- overspeed warning
How does the engine start message inhibits work?
New caution and advisory messages are inhibited until one of following occurs:
- engine reaches idle rpm
- start is aborted
- 2 minutes elapsed from start switch engagement
How long is master warning and fire bells inhibited for on takeoff?
From nose gear extension to first of 400ft AGL or 20 seconds elapsed time
How long are master caution aural annunciations inhibited for on take off? And if aborted?
From 80kts until first of 400ft AGL or 20 seconds following nose gear extension (come on if abort and reduce below 75kts)
What is the only EICAS advisory message inhibited on take-off?
WINDSHEAR SYS
What are the only EICAS landing inhibits? When are the inhibited to/from?
Communication inhibits an begin at 800ft AGL on approach and stops at less than 75kts groundspeed or above 900ft on missed approach
What does shutdown inhibit generically do?
Stops nuisance aural messages and cautions during shutdown
What happens to the Master Caution lights and caution aural alert with both fuel control switched in cut off?
They are inhibited
When is altitude alerting inhibited inflight?
With all landing gear down and locked
Takeoff configuration warning is for what 4 items?
When is it activated?
- Flaps
- Parking Brake
- Spoilers
- Stabilizer
Activated on the ground and thrust is in the take off range on either engine
How long does take off config warning remain after thrust is retarted so pilots can see what caused it?
10 seconds
When does the landing configuration warning sound?
In flight, gear not locked down, and if any of the following exists;
- flaps in a landing position
- any thrust lever back at idle and below 800ft
How cancel the landing configuration warning? (2)
Correct the condition or or push gear override switch
What gives warning of impeding stall?
Left and right stick shakers
What happens to slats if in takeoff position during a stall warning?
Provided left hand hydraulic system is pressurised then they automatically deploy to landing slat configuration (automatically return once stall warning condition ceases)
When does the ALT light appear and disappear when approaching an altitude?
On at 900ft to go, off at 300ft to go
When does master caution activate when deviating from and altitude and when does it stop?
When deviating more than 300ft away from selected altitude and stops once back within 300ft or greater than 900ft away from it
Difference between warning, caution, and advisories?
Warning - immediate crew awareness and action
Caution - immediate crew awareness and corrective action may be required
Advisory - routine crew awareness and corrective action may be required
Which EICAS computer normally controls EICAS in auto?
Left
Are master warnings inhibited on the ground with both engines shut down?
No
Are STATUS Messages MEL related?
Yes
Do Status Messages need to be checked in flight?
No
What do you need to be careful about when pressing EVENT RECORD lots of times?
Only the last event is recored, not a history
If you get a blank engine instrument displayed what can you do?
Go for AUTO EICAS computer across to the right computer. May not be the indication sensor but the EICAS computer itself
Terrain altitudes for the various colours of terrain for EGPWS?
Red = More than 2000ft above Amber = 500ft below to 2000ft above Green = 500ft below to 2000ft below
Terrain below 2000ft not shown = black
Caution terrain and solid amber when impact within?
40-60sec
Red warning pull up and solid red when impact within?
20-30sec
When terrain auto displayed?
When either caution terrain or warning pull-up indicated
Glideslope deviation arms below what altitude with gear extended?
1000ft agl
Bank angles sounds when?
35, 40, and 45 deg
At 80kts on take off what occurs (6) TRAMPF
- THR HLD
- Autobrakes RTO arms (85kts to be precise)
- Master Caution inhibited
- RAT auto deploy arms
- Pitch limit indicator comes into view
- If F/Ds not on they are armed to come up if G/A hit
4 main things TCAS provides?
RA
TA
Proximity Traffic
Other traffic
What time prediction does TA give from another aircraft approaching point of closest proximity?
35-40sec
What time does RA come on for a when?
20-30sec and when TCAS predicts aircraft will not have adequate separation
What is proximate traffic?
Not a TA or RA but within 6nm and 1200ft vertically
If an aircraft does not have alt info but within 6nm what does TCAS treat it as?
Proximate traffic
Other traffic displayed?
> 1200ft and >6nm
What happens if TCAS gives a TA to an aircraft that is off the scale range of HSI?
‘OFFSCALE’ appears on HSI along with TA aural
What does up or down arrow mean on TCAS traffic symbol?
Climbing or descending greater than 500fpm
What does a red/yellow “RA/TA 4.9 +04(up arrow)” mean on HSI?
Means no bearing available for this RA traffic but it is 4.9nm away from you and +400ft and climbing
What inhibits all TCAS alerts? (2)
GPWS
Windshear
What other specific inhibits does TCAS have? (2)
All RAs below 1000ft radalt
All TCAS voice below 500ft radalt
When does TCAS OFF appear on EICAS?
When you select TFC switch and TCAS is not in either TA or TA/RA
What is critical when using rudder for directional control / roll when at or below the stall speed?
Too fast rudder application or too much for too long can easily lead to loss of directional control or structural damage.
GO EASY ON THE RUDDERS AT OR BELOW THE STALL
Risk of control reversals at any speeds?
Multiple control reversals at any speed can lead to exceeding structural design limits
