Warning Systems Flashcards
What does dotted green terrain display on the navigation display indicate? Amber? Red? Magenta?
GREEN - Terrain from 2,000ft to 500ft (250 w/ gear) below the aircraft current altitude.
AMBER - Terrain 500ft (250 w/ gear) below Aircraft to 2,000ft above
RED - More than 2,000ft above
MAGENTA - No terrain data available
Is Doppler turbulence detection capable of detecting clear air turbulence?
NO! It requires at least light precip to sense velocities
What triggers an aural “CAUTION TERRAIN” alert with an amber TERRAIN message?
40 - 60 seconds from impact with terrain.
Warning 20-30 sec
For takeoff, when does the PWS (Predictive Windshear System) activate if the WXR switch is not selected ON during taxi?
Thrust lever angle advanced above 53 degrees
Does the weather radar provide alerting for all types of windshear?
No, The flight crew must rely on traditional methods at times. (No moisture, no way to know)
The predictive windshear (PWS) alert area extends how far?
3 NM ahead
30 degrees either side of course
When is predictive windshear alerting available on the ground after weather radar starts scanning?
After 12 seconds
When will the TCAS system issue the aural advisory “CLEAR OF CONFLICT”? “MONITOR VERTICAL SPEED”?
CLEAR OF CONFLICT - RA encounter terminated. Maneuver guidance finished.
MONITOR VERTICAL SPEED - Pitch ATT is away from the commanded RA. Keep away from the red area.
What triggers a “WINDSHEAR AHEAD” aural alert?
WS directly ahead of the Aircraft. Below 1200 ft RA
What are TCAS traffic advisory TA symbols? Resolution Advisory RA symbols?
TA (AMBER dot),
RA (RED box)
White Diamond
When are TCAS RAs inhibited?
RAs below 1000ft, TA ONLY
All TCAS alerts are inhibited by GPSW and windshear warnings.
How does the RUNWAY AWARENESS and ADVISORY SYSTEM (RAAS) operate?
Automatically, without any action from the Flight Crew
When could you receive an aural and visual WINDSHEAR alert on approach? Takeoff?
Approach - from an altitude of 1500ft AGL to 10ft AGL.
Takeoff - from rotation until reaching an altitude of 1500ft AGL.
What indicates that the TCAS computer is not computing RAs, but only TAs?
-TCAS indication is displaying “TA ONLY” in cyan color
When do GPWS windshear alerts occur? Where is the alert displayed?
Takeoff, approach, landing and missed approach. <1500 AGL
Alert is displayed on both attitude indicators
