Warm VS Cold fronts Flashcards
What is a warm front?
A warm front is when an advancing mass of warm air rises colder and replaces cooler air. The edge of a warm front contains a gradual slope, so the change is not as abrupt as when cold front moves in. As the warm air rises, it cools. The cooling air condenses creating rain, sleet, or snow.
How are warm and cold fronts similar?
Both warm and cold fronts bring precipitation
Both fronts move from west to east
They broth bring changes in the temperature, and both are weather conditions.
Both are boundaries between two contrasting air masses.
What is a cold front?
A cold front is a mass of cold air that pushes under a mass of warm air. The slope of a cold front is usually steep. This forces the warm air up suddenly and quickly causing the atmosphere to become unstable. As the warm air cools suddenly, water vapor in the rising warm air condenses and forms clouds and often thunderstorms along the frontal boundary. In the winter, cold fronts may cause the temperature to drop significantly. In the summer, cold fronts produce drier and cooler air.
