Warm Up Flashcards
Why do we warm up?
- To increase blood flow to muscles
- To raise body temperature
- To increase heart rate
- To allow greater flexibility
- To prepare body physically and mentally for exercise
- To help prevent injury
What are our different types of muscles?
• Bicep - The muscle at the top front of your arm
• Tricep - The muscle behind the bicep at the top back of your arm
(Biceps and triceps are an antagonistic pair - they work together to contract and stretch)
• Quadriceps - The muscle at the top front of your leg, above your knee
• Hamstring - The muscle behind your quadriceps at the top back of your leg
• Gastrocnemius - The muscle at the bottom back of your leg, below the hamstring
• Deltoid - The muscle on the back, behind your shoulders
What are the three parts of a warm up?
- Pulse raiser - this is an activity that increases your HR such as high knees and skipping
- Stretches - we stretch our muscles to stop them getting injured. For example, we do the lunge to stretch the gastrocnemius
- Skills practice - a practice linked to what we are doing (e.g. passing practice in Netball)
How does stretching our muscles help to reduce the chance of injury?
It reduces the chance of pulling a muscle because they’ve already been stretched out making them stronger, healthier and more flexible. Without stretching, the muscles would be weak and unable to extend all the way
