warm and cold based glaciers Flashcards
warm based glaciers:
where are they found
what is the climate like
what is a key feature
what processes occur in it
what is the surface tem in winter and summer
what is the base temperature in the winter and summer
-warm based glaciers are found in alpine environments
-fluctuating, warmer temperatures
-lots of meltwater is the key feature
-high erosion from basal sliding
-internal deformation is present too
surface temp:
-winter = -10C
-summer = 5C
base tem:
-winter = 0c
-summer = 0C (melting as it reaches PMP)
cold based glaciers:
where are they found
what is the climate like
what is a key feature
what processes occur in it
what is the surface tem in winter and summer
what is the base temperature in the winter and summer
-found in polar environments
-consistnelt dry and cold
-very little meltwater is a key feature
-internal deformation is the only process that occurs, very little basal sliding
surface temp:
-winter = -20C – -30C
-summer = -15*C
base temp:
-winter = -10C (little change compared to summer)
-summmer = -10C (way below PMP)
what is the pressure melting point (PMP)
-the PMP is the temperature at which ice melts under pressure
- deeper = more mass weighing down on base = more pressure on base = more friction = lower pressure melting point
