Q

Background

A

1491 - another pretender emerged to challenge Henry - uncertainty about his background - probably well-educated and learnt English and by 17 traveled to Ireland - Claimed to be Richard Duke of York (younger of the 2 Princes in Tower disappeared in ‘83)
- plausible + no way to disprove Warbeck’s claim use this uncertainty to their adv - 1491-97 received support from 7 foreign rulers to use him and put pressure on Henry e.g Charles VIII, Margaret of Burgundy and her family etc

Q

Challenge 1491-95

A

reception was mixed - people of Cork enthusiastic but Earl of Kildare reluctant to get involved directly - failed to materialise so wrote to other European rulers for hope - Charles VIII invited him to France and was treated as if he was a prince - went to Margaret went to even ‘recognise’ him as a nephew
- 1494-95 Henry increasingly concerned by threat - sign he was starting to raise a rebellion
