What did the War Precautions Act do?
It gave the government the legal right to monitor German-Australian citizens, levy a direct income tax and have a set price for certain goods just for them.
What also became a crime along with the War Precaution Act?
It became a crime to say anything that might discourage people from enlisting or show disloyalty to the British Empire
What is meant by the term “enemy aliens”
“Enemy aliens” are residents of Australia who had been born in countries that were now enemies in the war.
How did the War Precautions Act affect the Australian-Germans?
Germans had to register at local police stations, submit to random searches, and arrests. Germans lost their jobs, property and right to vote as well as schools and newspapers being shut down.
How is conscription propaganda similar to recruitment propaganda?
It used techniques of persuasion, fear and guilt, as well as having a hatred to germans as a whole nation
What was the Yes side of the conscription propaganda?
Yes: focused on the people’s fear by allowing them to believe that if men were not sent to fight overseas the Germans would invade Australia.
What was the NO side of the conscription propaganda?
No: emphasise the fact that men were being sent against their wishes to die overseas.
What impact did the Conscription debate have on the Australian Labor Party in particular?
It caused Hughes and the Labour party to split, with Hughes and his supports forming their own party called ‘The Nationalists’.
Why did the Government use Censorship?
