the life of rupert brooke
Rupert Brooke was born in 1887 in England and later on went to Cambridge
During the war became an officer in the royal navy
He in particular belonged to the movement of the Georgian poets, they advocated a return to nature and simpler emotions
On a leave in 1914 Brooke wrote the war sonnets that made his fame, they show the heroic side of war
the soldier
This is ruper brooke most famous sonnet it was written in the first months of world war I when patriotism and old heroic ideals had not yet faded. We find the same identification of the soldier with England as the field where soldier are buried become for ever England. The identification of soldier and mother country is reastated in the tercets.
siegrfield sasoon
Siegfried Sassoon was born in Kent in 1886 later on he was educated in Cambridge. During the war was awarded the military cross but when he was hospitalized, he refused to go back to the frontlines. he denounced the war’s horrors. Sassoon war poetry shows both his great courage and his hatred of war. Its main element is the irony that often surprises the reader. His attacks on the government, the church and the high command were conveyed through direct speech.
glory of women
In this sonnet published in 1916 sasoon pitilessly exposes not only women’s lack of knowledge of what the war reall y is, but also their hypocrisy
In the last tercet the poest shifts the scene to a german mother knitting socks for her son by the fire.
wilfred owen life
Wilfred Owen was born in 1893 in Shropshire.
Owens experience of war led him to reject the traditional themes of Georgian verse but also his stylistic features. His poems are technically remarkable for their extensive use of half rhymes assonance and alliteration
dulce et decorum est
This poem published in 1920 is the most striking statement on the horror of the war. The first stanza portrays the horror of the war using a sensous language.The central part of the poem deals with the terrible new chemical weapon of world war I poison gas. The last stanza where he follows the wagon carrying dead or dying bodies. At this point he writes horacles famous latin tag learned by generations of British choolchilden, sounding bitterly ironic.
