spools are circular - never-ending line of suffering. cataloguing suffering in an orderly way , as if trying to control his response to the situation. reminiscent of war graves.
“as though this were a church and he a priest preparing to intone a Mass”
moral calling to do this job. shows this is sacred and important to him, where the process is ritualistic. religious imagery shows duty.
“All flesh is grass”
biblical reference and highlights fragility of life.
“He has a job to do”
abrupt short sentence showing importance of job to him.
“Rural England”
connotations of peaceful
“ordinary pain”
contrasts with war zones, where at home its just ‘everyday’ problems.
“running children in a nightmare heat.”
shocking as they are innocent + don’t understand. implies danger and the adrenaline of experiencing conflict makes it feel unreal.
“Something is happening”
short, abrupt sentence highlights development of war, creates suspense.
“half formed ghost”
shows that he experiences people losing their lives but also shows the lack of meaning as it is happening everywhere
“pick out five or six”
shows the contrast of what is really happening and what we see of it. shows how little it impacts the public.
“prick with tears”
shows it only slightly impacts them but they are then easily able to go back to what they are doing
