extended metaphor - like taste of onion will linger, so may a relationship be hard to leave behind. ‘fierce’ has darker and more negative associations which highlights complex nature of love. sounds threatening, danger.
“shrink to a wedding ring”
suggests relationship has become claustrophobic and restrictive - constraints of marriage.
“Lethal.”
intensity of relationship may lead to destruction. short sentence implies danger.
