Q

“The reader’s eyeballs prick with tears between the bath and pre-lunch beers”

A
  • ‘Eyeballs’ suggests that the reader ‘crying’ is a mechanical reflex, as they don’t have a genuine or emotional response, it also reflects the ugliness of the readers disingenuous reponse
  • ‘Prick’ conveys lack of tears
  • Creates an impression such that the reader is forcing themselves to forget about the war by cleansing themselves through the bath then showing disheartened carelessness by getting drunk to avoid their consciousness

A
  • Sibilance implies that his job is sinister, he is a public observer and does nothing creation an impression such that the true nature of war is being hushed away so that everyone can move on with their lives
  • ‘Ordered rows’ juxtaposes the chaos of war, and creates an allusion to a graveyard highlighting how he is living through the deaths of others
