• Japanese forces during the 1942 based in New Guinea with the objective to capture Port Moresby so they can launch regular bombings against northern australia and get supplies from the sea
• they had to pass through the Kokoda track jungle to get to Port Moresby due to the American naval presence in the seas
• Australian military units were sent to New Guinea to stop Japanese advancement on the track
• the battle of coral sea was won by USA
• at first the japs advanced and damaged untrained Australian men but when the American airforce bombed the Japanese home islands and thief base (nov 1942), Australia was able to advance and win the Kokoda track.
