war and conflict Flashcards
what does stewart argue that causes war and conflict
stewart argues that the underlying causes of war and conflict are economic rather that ethnic/cultural
economic effects of war
wars are costly in terms of the cost of rebuilding the infrastructure damaged by conflict
-in a war-torn country business slows down or stops because it is unsafe – with a corresponding downturn in employment and income.
displacement
Displacement is an immediate problem caused by conflict, and results in problems related to living in temporary accommodation (tents), with possible poor sanitation and food shortages.
- there are also longer-term problems related to lack of status, children being out of education.
modernisation theory perspective on war and conflict
war and conlict is yet another internal barrier to developmnet. there is conflict in the developing world because people are strongly aligned to a traditional religious faith, and these come into conflict.
what is conflict a symptom of- as argued by modernisation theorists
they argue that conflict is a symptom of primitive values such as collectivism and tribalism. they would therefore argue that there would be fewer conflicts if countries were to develop and become modern capitalist states.
what does paul collier argue paradoxically
collier argues paradoxically, that resource wealth can lead to conflict. countries with oil reserves and diamonds, for instance often attract conflict. ethnic divides and political instability are also key.
how does collier argue that conflict should be minimised
he argues that aid should examine conflict risk and minimise conflict for the goood of MEDCs and LEDCs themselves as unstable regions pose a threat to MEDCs in the form of terrorism.
how do marxists disagree’
marxists on the other hand argue that it is the west that causes the wars. though conflicts occur inn the developing world, the west are often combatants in those wars. of course there are a lot of wars in LEDCs where western nations are not active combatants, but dependency theorists still argue that the west has caused these wars through colonialism and imperialism
how has the west caused conflict through imperialism and colonialism
imperialists and colonialists drew new boundaries and created nations within which tribal national and ethnic conflicts developed. sometimes leading to horrific ethnic conflicts like the rwandan civil war. furthermore, many conflicts are started of exacerbated by poverty and lack of resources which marxists believe are caused by capitalism.
