Conscientious objector
Someone who refuses to serve in the armed forces for ethical reasons
Violence
The intentional use of force or power against oneself, another person, or a group
Terrorism
The unlawful use of violence, including against innocent civilians, to achieve a political or religious goal
Weapons of
mass destruction
Biological, chemical and nuclear weapons that can cause widespread damage and kill thousands of people
Mediator
Person or group who tries to help those in conflict reach an agreement
Stewardship
Looking after something so it can be passed on to the next generation
Disarmament
Reducing, withdrawing, or abolishing weapons
Holy war
War to spread a religious belief or to defend that belief
Just war theory
A set of conditions that need to be met in order for a war to be justified
Passive resistance
Non-violent opposition to something; this may involve going against certain laws
Aggressor
Person, group or country that is the first to attack
Terrorist
Person who uses unlawful violence or threats to harm or injure people
Apartheid
System in South Africa, which legally segregated and discriminated against people according to their race
Justice
Doing what is right a fair (mostly based on the law)
Peacemaker
Someone who works for peace and an end to conflict
situation ethics
Ethical decisions are made according to the specific context of the decision (most loving thing to do)
Pacifist
Someone who believes that war and violence are never justified
Looting
Stealing goods from shops and houses, usually during a war or riot
Conflict
A serious disagreement
Atrocity
Extremely cruel or barbaric attack, usually involving violence
Pacifism
The belief that war can never be justified and that conflicts should be settled peacefully
forgiveness
Pardoning a person for a wrong committed against you, in a Christian context, forgiveness does not always come about because the person deserves to be forgiven but out of love, mercy and grace.
