How to prune a spring flowering shrub

A

Forsythia x intermedia ‘Lynwood’ variety
Prune after flowering in April/May.
Remove dead, diseased, damaged and crossing branches.
Thin out older stems at the base, to encourage vigorous new growth.
Prune overall shape by about a third.
Prune after an outward facing bud, angled away from the bud to avoid water sitting on it.
Mulch and feed after pruning.

How to prune a summer flowering

A

Buddleja davidii ‘Black Knight’
Can be pruned lightly in Autumn, and drastically in March.
Prune by a third in Autumn, to reduce risk of wind rock.
In March stems are pollarded into a ‘stags horn’ shape to promote strong bushy growth. Removing any dead, diseased and damaged branches. Cuts made above and sloping away from a bud at an angle of 45 degrees. Feed and mulch after pruning.

How to prune a shrub grown for it’s winter interest.

A

Cornus alba ‘Siberica’
Deciduous shrub. Grown for it’s attractive juvenile red stems in winter. Cut back hard in March, after the red stems have been enjoyed over winter. This will promote new growth of red stems for the following year. Feed and mulch.
