what problems has a lack of clean water created for the region?
- unregulated water extraction has led to villages overextracting water. this results in a lck of ground water wich in turn has caused problems such as soil salinisation and waterloging.
- crops cannot be irrigated properly due to the low avalibility of the well/ground water. this affacts the regions level of food security.

how was the programm implemented?
the program was implemented using taankas, johed, pats and education. the education was to raise awarness about protecting clean water supplies, reducing waste and overextraction of natural ground water.
what is a taanka?
a taanka is a traditional rainwater harvesting teqhnique practiced in the rajasthan region. underground concreate containers collect rainwater that flows down through pipes from roof gutters.
name one advantage of using taanakas?
the concrete of the taankas ensure that the water is cool, which means no water is lost by evaporation.
name one disadvantege of using taankas.
the concrete production releases carbon dioxide wich contributs to global warming.
what is a johed?
a johed is a small dam made from earth and sand which can be used to increase river flow, ensuring rivers flow all year round.
name one advantage of using a johed.
johed dams can keep river water flowing all year round, which means that when the dry season is happening there will still be a water source.
name one disadvantage of using a johed.
johed dams only affect the water supply to a small extent, so they may not be able to help an entire village.
what are pats?
pats are irrigation channels that transfer water from rivers to crop fields. a small dam called a bund is created wich diverts water from the river to the crop field.
what are bunds made of?
bunds are made of stones and lined with leaves to ensure that they are water proof this is to make sure that they can fully direct the water and not lose any.
name one advantage of using pats.
farmers crop fields can recive a consant supply of water, this reduces the risk of crop failure.
name one disadvantage of using pats.
channels need constant maintainance and cleaning because they fill with silt.
