W4 - The Brain Flashcards
Cerebrum function
Contains sensory, motor and association areas from all 5 lobes (frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital & insula)
Cerebellum function
Co-ordinates motor movements and maintains balance
Thalamus function
Relay station - sorts and edits sensory information and conducts it to the relevant areas of the cerebral cortex. Also conducts impulses between the cerebral motor areas and the cerebellum
Hypothalamus function
Controls and integrates activities of the ANS
Regulates emotions/behaviours, controls temp, hunger, thirst, sleep and produces hormones
Epithalamus function
Secretes melatonin which is involved in sleep
Midbrain function
Visual and auditory reflexes
Produces dopamine
Pons function
Relays information between the cerebrum and the cerebellum
Various somatic and visceral motor centres
Controls breathing
Medulla oblongata function
Conduction pathways between the brain and spinal cord
Autonomic centres for regulations of visceral functions (cardiovascular, respiratory, blood vessels, digestive system activities)
Prefrontal cortex location
Frontal lobe - cerebrum
Prefrontal cortex function
Co-ordinates information from all association areas
Involved in intellect, complex learning abilities, recall and personality,, abstract ideas, judgement, reasoning, planning
Primary motor cortex location
Frontal lobe - cerebrum
Primary motor cortex function
Issues motor command to individual skeletal muscles
Premotor cortex location
Frontal lobe - cerebrum
Premotor cortex function
Allows for sequential muscle contractions associated with skilled/learned movements (typing or dancing)
Broca’s area location
Frontal lobe - cerebrum
